U.S. Nuclear Reactor Status Up So wary as Hurricane Sandy

The rise in water level due to storm Sandy resulted in a number of nuclear reactors in the U.S. get the alert status because of flooded water.

Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) the oldest in the United States, which is not in operation due to scheduled refueling, get alert status Monday (10/29/2012) night as the water rose nearly 2 meters above sea level due to storm Sandy.

Conditions Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township, New Jersey, and all the plant and the surrounding areas in the U.S. are safe. Explains the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which oversees the plant safety. The commission added that there are no nuclear power plants shut down plan that was working before the storm arrives.

The high water level in Oyster Creek, which can generate electricity to light 600,000 homes per year, prompting the authorities to declare the status of "unusual circumstances" and then raised to "alert", or second-bottom in the four-tier warning system.

NPP owner, Exelon Corp., said the power supply is interrupted at the plant, but diesel backup generators to provide stable power to ration fuel more than two weeks.

Combined high waves, winds, and storms strengthened to raise the water level at the plant. NRC explained. The agency said the water is expected to recede within a few hours at the plant, which began operating in 1969 and is scheduled to close at 2019.

Other nuclear power plants in Salem and Hope Creek, also in New Jersey, which produces electricity for three million homes per day, also in the supervision.

Nuclear power plant in Lusby, Maryland, still operating with full, enough to supply power to one million homes.

In August 2011, a number of nuclear power plants put out after Hurricane Irene, while others reduce power plant.
